The MC4 Solar Connector is an IP68-rated DC plug that joins solar cables into one sealed joint. Installers, homeowners and farms across South Africa use it to link solar panels with mc4 connectors.
It also extends a DC cable run from the array to the inverter PV input. New installs, extended leads and plug repairs all use the same crimped joint.
MC4 Solar Connector Key Benefits
- Sealed joint carries a listed IP68 waterproof rating for rooftops.
- Male and female halves click together for a firm connection.
- Fits standard 2.5mm² to 6mm² solar cable used on PV strings.
These points matter on exposed roofs, where joints face sun, rain and dust for years. A solar panel plug that seals well keeps the string producing power after storms.
What 1500V DC And 30A Mean
The 1500V DC figure is the highest string voltage the connector is rated to carry. Add up the open-circuit voltage of every panel in series, then check it stays below that rating.
Current works the same way, because the 30A rating caps what each joint can safely carry. Check the panel datasheet short-circuit current before you order, so the string stays inside that limit. Loadshedding backup only works if the DC side holds up, so ratings deserve a check on every quote.
Compatibility And Cable Fit
This connector takes 2.5mm² to 6mm² cable, so it pairs with 6mm black solar wire for negative runs. Use matching red wire from our 6mm solar cable range on the positive side of each string. For portable panels, the Mini Anderson to MC4 adapter links MC4 leads to Anderson-plug charging setups.
It won’t suit cable above 6mm², the 35mm² battery cable or any string above 1500V DC or 30A. Browse the full Connectors range for adapters and plugs that suit the same DC wiring.
How To Crimp An MC4 Connector
Crimp every contact with a matched MC4 crimping tool, not pliers, and tug the cable before closing up. In our experience, a loose crimp is the main reason an MC4 joint overheats on a hot roof. The tool isn’t included, so source one matched to the contact size before the job.
Push the crimped contact into its housing until it clicks, then tighten the rear nut. Once the male and female halves lock, the joint seals out rain and dust on exposed roofs. A firm crimp and a clean click mean the joint stays cool under full sun.
Best Use Cases For Solar Wiring
- Solar installers crimping strings on new rooftop installs.
- Homeowners extending a short panel lead to the inverter.
- Farms repairing a damaged plug on ground-mounted arrays.
Businesses use the same solar cable connector when an array grows or a lead is rerouted. Each job needs one mc4 male connector and one female half per joint, so count joints before ordering.
Warranty Compliance And Trust
No product certification is listed for this connector, and IP68 is a rating, not an approval. Under SANS 10142-1 and the Electrical Installation Regulations, a registered person issues the Certificate of Compliance. For PV connector safety tests, see the IEC 62852 standard for DC connectors.
